I’m watching a movie every day in 2025, and in March I only watched films directed by women. Pretty quickly, I started thinking a lot about how female friendships are portrayed onscreen—especially the weird, messy, hyper-specific kind I know from real life. So I wrote about the movies that got it right (Booksmart, Waitress, Whip It, Daisies) and the one that really didn’t (Am I OK?) to explore what it actually feels like when movies let girls be fully themselves—with each other.
